Available only on Japanese iPhones

You might think iPhone 3Gs are equal all over the world. Well, not quite.

There are something that is only available on Japanese iPhones: the shutter sound in silent mode.

In Japan, the camera on mobile phones can be as high as 5.2M Pixels and they could be used for sneak shots such as spy shots and/or dirty pictures.

For this reason, Japanese manufacturer have stopped the disabling of shutter sound in silent mode; some manufacturers have even put louder shutter sound.

Many cell phone collectors have wondered if the sound will be on on the iPhone 3G especially because they knew the original iPhone 2G killed the shutter sound in silent mode; well, the answer was 'YES' and, although quietly, the Japanese iPhone 3G would make a sound if you take picture even when it is set to silent mode.

Fascinating thought but isn't it true the iPhone as sold in the U.S. also has a camera shutter click that can't be automatically muted? In which case, the fact that the click remains audible isn't a feature tailor-made for the Japanese market at all but just a regular standard global iPhone feature? Any thoughts?

Kageyama-san, is it so? My friends tell me otherwise.

Andrew, thanks for the UK report!

Shige-san, thanks. Some people don't have the grace or sufficient intelligence to talk about something. But don't worry, I believe those readers who would matter have the intelligence we would expect.

Shige said, 'laughing at Japanese by Australian racists.'

Have you lived in Japan? I see men on a daily basis taking pics of women 'secretly.' A few train lines in Tokyo and Osaka are 'Ladies Only' during rush hour. Is it racist to point out the obvious?

I think it's law that cell phone cameras have to make a sound in Japan. There was a huge problem a few years ago. Keep in mind that at Yokohama JR train station one police officer is employed to look for perverts year round, that's just one of the train companies at just one station... multiply it by the 130 train lines and thousands of stations in the Tokyo area.

    Hi, Bob.

The sex crime rate in Australia is about 9 times of it in Japan.
But Gizmodo Australia says Japanese are perverts.

It must be an Australian joke.

    Bob,

I don't want to get too nationalistic. But I think they have the police in Yokohama JR station because that is one of the most popular site for perverts. It doesn't necessarily mean thousand of stations in Tokyo area have police officers although I wish they did; so there would be less problems with borrachos (drunken people), etc.

There are murders almost every minute in the US, but that doesn't imply all (North) Americans are murderer.
I think that same logic applies to the theory that not all Japanese are pervert.

If you have sufficient imagination about how you would feel, if you are told that people of your nationality are all perverts, you shouldn't be able to leave such comment.

Maybe all your Japanese friends happen to be perverts for some reason; there is a saying that 'Birds of a feather flock together.'
But it doesn't necessarily mean all 150 million Japanese are perverts.

If you are one of those international people who have ever lived outside your own country, you should be more careful about stereotyping.

Several people have come up with a hack (or a workaround) to mute the shutter sound, by playing a long silent mp3 track on iPhone while taking a shot :)

Re: ladies only cars, at first I found it discriminating, but given the crazy "rush hour" packed trains every morning in Japan, I tend to think it's a fair system for everyone's benefit: even for man, who can't move their hands at all in the packed train to avoid being mistaken as a groper.

    Miyagawa-san
There seem to be work around for everything ;-)
Regarding the train issue, I think the best solution for all would be:
    1. Japanese corporations become more flexible about what time their employees would show up
    2. Japanese train companies would either double the number of trains

I think the train companies these days have so much more income than before thanks to the raised travel fare as well as the exterior advertising which wasn't there until about a decade ago.

Those revenue should be used for the customers benefit. I think.
