I have a question.....i live in canada....i'm going to go to japan this summer....i really don't want to rent mobile phones...what i had in mind was to purchase a mobile. However i know that canada and japan is totally different bandwith. and i also saw the mobile phone by Vodafone (V801SA) this interests me. but i'm wondering if i buy it, would i be able to use it in Canada? and also if i'm not a japanese residence, would i be able to sign up for a mobile phone?......or if i just use my friend's address would be fine?.....please help me!...THX!

If you have a GSM phone right now (or just the SIM card) and if you are staying in Japan for only a short period of time, vodafone global rental should be the best thing for you:
    <a href="http://www.vodafone-rental.jp/">http://www.vodafone-rental.jp/</a>
you can put in your Canadian GSM SIM card and use it. But maybe it is not the best thing because each call will cost A LOT and even if your Japanese friend is calling you within Japan, they will have to dial your Canadian number.

To buy a Japanese mobile phone with Japanese number, but if you are paying the monthly fee with your credit card, you will need no ID, etc. Just your address and credit card information.

Also there is a pre-paid phone by Vodafone.

Yes, you can use it In Canada. But it is SIM locked, so you cannot use SIM card from your local GSM carriers.

in Canada, you will be roaming via Microcell or Rogers' network.
It will cost you about 125 yen (1 USD+) per minutes for local calls. 140 yen for calls between Japan. And I believe this charge will be made to both you and someone you are talking to.

So I think it is not a good idea to use it as your regular phone. It is only good for short stays.

    bonjour Driss,

Je suis désolé. Mais je n'en sais pas.
I am sorry but I don't know any.

It would be very difficult in Japan to buy just the phone (without the SIM card). You have to be present at the phone shop along with a few identification. I don't think anyone would ship them internationally.

Besides, all Japanese phones are SIM-locked and even if you could unlock it, I am not sure if they would work with European GSM SIM card.
